Who says family vacations are always sunshine and icebergs? Our Alaskan adventure was no exception. We packed our bags, ready for a week of glacier gazing and wildlife watching, but little did we know, a different kind of adventure awaited.
My father-in-law, despite his persistent cough, was determined to make the most of our trip. We hiked, explored, and laughed together, but the exhaustion was real. By the end of the week, I was feeling a little under the weather, but I brushed it off as vacation fatigue.
That all changed as we boarded our return flight. My body ached, my head spun, and the coughing...oh, the coughing! My poor kids were mortified as I hacked my way through the flight, surrounded by a chorus of sneezes and coughs from fellow passengers.
Turns out, we were all victims of the dreaded COVID-19. Our Alaskan adventure had turned into a coughing catastrophe!
As funny as it sounds now, it turned out to be a miserable start of Covid distress. Nothing was funny during or after it.
I was very sick. My head hurt like never before. I was exhausted more than I had ever been. My body was just a run down aching mess. After almost 2 months, I finally recovered but only to discover for the next 9 months and counting, I would have flare ups of heart palpitations, GI issues, unbelievable stomach pains, unexplainable fatigue, head fog, and pressure squeezing at my body. I could barely get through the day.
Anytime I would start to recover and work out, bam, I would fall back into a sick stupor.
Just 2 months ago, I was starting to run effortlessly, until overnight it seemed, I became too tired to finish running one mile, taking naps here and there throughout the day because I couldn't keep my eyes open, trekking up the stairs left me winded, and my stomach was a bloated tornado.
Doctor visit after doctor visit there would be something slight found, iron saturation, low B-12, but nothing to explain why I was being knocked out and dragged down.
Of course, the doctors hinted at me being depressed, since I have history of clinical depression, but I was not depressed. Just tired and frustrated from being sick and tired all the time.
Then, it they said it must be stress. Nope.
The next solution had to be my age, right?
"You are getting older. You have to accept that your body can't do what it used to do?"
What? I just told them what I use to could do just months ago, until I couldn't.
Finally, I gave in. It must be the old age. I am losing my health because of genetics and family history.
Any day, my heart was going to give out. My doctor was going to tell me that I have diabetes or that I am getting dementia. What if I have cancer?
Funny, how you can go there especially when your doctors are taking the easy way out and giving you stock answers. Copy, paste answers: It is in her head or she won't accept she is getting old or worse yet, she is lying about the activities she does and foods she eats.
I felt unheard and like I was going to stay sick and stuck in a run-down body with no solutions ever!
Then I saw pictures of my friends who are my age or older: running, exercising, and going on epic adventures.
I had just been on one. Scaled the mountains and steep terrains like nothing. I was fit and then I wasn't.
It wasn't my age, it had to be something else.
Then, the Facebook Memories post came. The one were a few years earlier I had posted the quote, Let food be thy medicine, by Hippocrates, allegedly.
That is it!
It was time to start using my Vitamix regularly again. In the past, Vitamix smoothies helped me digest the nutrients I needed every time.

2 months later, I am feeling back to my old fit and healthy self.
